Sustainable Business Network Meeting

Amy Silvester, Business Operations and Sustainability Advisor, was delighted to be asked by the Sustainable Business Partnership (SBP) to speak at their regular networking session this month.

The subject was how to calculate your carbon footprint and find solutions to reduce it. As a local SME based in Winchester, it was a great opportunity to show the group what DigitalMeeting had already achieved to publish a carbon footprint of 2.34 tonnes a year.

Amy told the group that this had been achieved by looking at the basics, for example the turning off of lights and electrical equipment at the end of the day. DigitalMeeting have also reduced the waste bins in the office to 1, which has remarkably reduced the amount of waste. For the last few months they have also been issuing invoices for their DigitalMeeting service by PDFs and emails which not only reduces the amount of paper and envelopes used, but the cost of delivering these.

Amy highlighted the fact that it is hard to calculate the reduction in a carbon footprint, using a basic but valuable calculator, from adopting a new method of invoicing, but it shouldn’t put businesses off from looking at all aspects of reducing waste and energy.

DigitalMeeting are members of Winchester Action on Climate Change (WinACC) and their website will direct you to a simple Carbon Footprint calculator which will give you an idea of your current carbon footprint. The website offers plenty of tips to and provides you with some great tips on how to reduce it.

Likewise, it is essential to look at the SBP website, as they also offer great advice on sustainability and show you where you can find financial help to reduce your energy costs and usage. With more networking groups being established, you could certainly benefit from trying to attend a network meeting near you.

In the meantime, companies could instantly reduce their carbon footprint by looking at their business travel and using alternatives to driving to that meeting.
